An original Apple I is one of the rarest and most valuable computers in the world. Of the approximately 200 units built, only a few have survived to this day. Accordingly, originals fetch prices of several hundred thousand to over one million US dollars at auction and are out of reach for most collectors.
In order to be able to present the beginnings of Apple as authentically as possible, I decided on a high-quality replica of Armin (apple-1-replica.com). It is based on the original down to the last detail and was built with numerous contemporary original ICs. It is complemented by a faithfully reproduced ASCII keyboard, a matching power supply and a reproduction of the historical operating manual.
It was particularly important to me that the replica not only looks like the original, but can also be operated like an Apple I. It impressively conveys how computer enthusiasts programmed and worked with their system in the mid-1970s. For me, it is therefore much more than a replacement for an original – it makes a piece of computer history come alive without claiming one of the few surviving original devices.
