Powerbook Duo 270c
Announced in october 1993, the powerbook duo 270c further improved on previous duos by adding a 68882 FPU to its 33 MHz 68030 processor. It was also the first duo to include an active-matrix 16 bit screen.
What truly made the duo 270c special was its duo concept: To save weight and size, many ports were omitted in mobile mode. ADB, SCSI, serial ports, a floppy disk drive, video output, and Ethernet were only available when the device was docked in a duo docking station (minidock or duo dock). Docked, the duo essentially became a fully functional desktop mac – complete with an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and network connectivity.
Weighing in at around 2.1 kg, the powerbook duo 270c was extremely portable for its performance class. The NiMH battery allowed for approximately 2–3 hours of runtime, depending on usage. Its slim, minimalist design made it particularly popular with business travelers.
In retrospect, the powerbook duo 270c is considered one of the best 68k notebooks Apple ever built: very fast, exceptionally well-made, and conceptually ahead of its time. Today, it is highly prized by collectors, especially when purchased complete with the dock, as only then does its original usage concept become fully apparent.
