Too beautiful

There were some Macs I couldn't afford back then, but desperately wanted. These very machines now hold a special place in my collection.

One of those devices with a special status is the Power Macintosh G4 Cube. Like so many Apple products, it is a design masterpiece: a fanless computer in a transparent case, accompanied by a matching display. An object that looked more like art than a computer. It's also worth mentioning that the Cube was equipped with a sensor, so the start button didn't need to be touched. A clever piece of technology in a perfect design.

In 2000, however, the Cube was simply too expensive. At the same time, the competition from within Apple itself, the G4 Tower, was too strong. It was more powerful and, above all, upgradeable – the Cube, on the other hand, was not. So it disappeared from the market after just one year. Well-intentioned, beautiful to look at – a bit like the 2013 Mac Pro.

Surprisingly, the G4 Cubes still run perfectly after 25 years. I have several in my collection, and none show any significant signs of age.
