apple III
The apple III was intended as the successor to the apple II series, but proved to be a failure. The system was announced in early 1980 and launched in late 1980. Serious stability problems forced a recall of the first 14,000 apple IIIs produced. While the apple II included several important business products such as visicalc, multiplan, and apple writer, its hardware architecture, operating system, and developer environment were limited. The apple III addressed these weaknesses.
The original apple III were replaced in 1983 by a completely redesigned model. This newer version included a built-in clock, video interlacing, standardized rear-panel connectors, 256 KB of RAM as standard, and a redesigned keyboard. Owners of the earlier apple III could obtain the newer logic board as a service replacement.
