There were some Macs I couldn't afford back then, but desperately wanted. These very machines now hold a special place in my collection.
There's the Power Mac G5. Like its successor, the Intel Mac Pro (1,1 to 5,1), it probably has the best case Apple has ever built. Extremely expandable, superbly crafted, and timeless in design.
Even the current Mac Pro is visually almost indistinguishable from the G5 – although the G5 was even more clearly structured for my taste. Technically, however, Apple took a risky approach with the G5: it opted for water cooling – a unique experiment in Apple's history.
For vintage collectors, this is precisely what's problematic today. Not all G5 systems are still watertight after more than 20 years. And if coolant leaks, the G5 quickly becomes a serious restoration problem.
